A Decade or so ago Ben Levin and myself were invited to contribute chapters to an upcoming guide “50 Best Tailwaters To Fly Fish” being helmed by well known Arizona outfitters Terry and Wendy Gunn.
The book was a compendium of some of the finest destinations to fish across the USA, including the White below Bull Shoals and Norfork, all elevated or indeed created by the cold water coming out of man made dams.
The Gunn’s wrote about their home tailwater, Lees’ Ferry below Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona, home to trophy class rainbows.
Now with extended drought and warming temperatures, that cold water is in short supply, with Lake Powell approaching the level at which hydro-electric generation will cease. Invasive smallmouth bass are approaching and it has even the Gunn’s pondering whether it will be trout or warmwater bass as the future.
