There are going to be a lot of eyes on the Madison River this winter as authorities grapple with ways to reduce crowding, and improve fishing experience, on one of the Rocky Mountain most loved and pressured water ways.

As COVID pressure increased river use across the country fisheries managers and conservation groups are looking to the Madison experience to plan their way forward.

Usage of the Madison river more than doubled between 1989 and 2019. Access limits to boat traffic and on guides and outfitters were introduced by an advisory panel earlier this year. But the pushback has authorities considering opening up additional boat access on weekend in certain stretches. There will be a Zoom meeting to discuss repeal of these restriction on Montana’s upper Madison River, on December 15, 2021 at 10 a.m

The meeting will also be expected to discuss new rules requiring all river users to document and report on their experience every trip, caps on guide trips and the potential for a special Madison River permit.
