Dally’s Fly Fishing Report 8/19/21

SCHOOL’S BACK and the traffic is dropping on week days at least.

This morning rose warm and muggy under gray skies, perfect for chasing some big brown trout. And with hot temperatures back in the forecast next week summer is not over yet.

The lakes are still on schedule to come out of power pool in mid-September which could result in our first big swing away from the tactics which have sustained us all summer. The USACE Lake Forecast had us coming out of flood pool the week of the FFI Southern Council Conclave.

However unfortunately Conclave was this morning postponed for 12 months due to “health and safety” concerns.

Fall perhaps looks promising for a return to some low flow midge fishing and perhaps some wading. It would be a smart play to be checking for leaks in your waders, that your boot soles are solid and any cleats need replacing over the next few weeks.

WHITE RIVER

COOLER temperatures this week and the flows have stayed under 19,000cfs, even on the peak afternoon pushes, with over nights in the 12,000-13,000cfs range. Milder swings mean the trout settle into feeding zones more comfortably.

Foam patterns like Fat Alberts, Evan’s Baby Foam, Trigger Bellies and Chubby Chernobyls have been working solidly. More important is placement and patience. Truly White River brown trout rise slower than even those infamous southern hemisphere browns.

If you are shifting subsurface look to Girdle Bugs, and Tailwater Jigs (Cranberry, Ruby and Black Copper) Frenchies and Hare’s Ears.

We have also been getting some solid reports from those fishing worm patterns in tan and red.

NORFORK

Norfork continues to fish solidly with Blobs, Mops and Worms, weighted heavily. Get them down and be prepared to lose some flies. Take over some larger Sunday Specials and Hare’s Ears, Tailwater Jigs in Cranberry and it is solid
