Lines Leaders & Lipstick II

Kim Frantom’s report on the second Lines Leaders & Lipstick event last weekend

“This past weekend was the Second Annual Lines, Leaders & Lipstick Women’s Fly Fishing Event put on by the Trout Chicks of the Trout Unlimited Arkansas White River Chapter 698 and sponsored by various local businesses. Over 60 women, travelling from Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Oklahoma, were in Cotter this year attending the event, learning and improving their fly fishing and fly tying skills.

More than 20 women signed up for the Beginning Fly Fishing class instructed by Lesley Herron Allen, and the remaining 40 women participated in workshops covering topics from Entomology, instructed by Susan Parsons, Casting Instructions, provided by Lori Sloas, Rigging for Success, instructed by Treasure Stover, to River Access/Local Tips, provided by Bill Thorne.

All proceeds from the event went to the Arkansas Casting for Recovery group. More information on this year’s event, and any future Lines, Leaders & Lipstick events, can be found at http://www.whiterivertu.com.

Our very own, Ron McQuay, with the assistance of resident shop bum, Danny Sabo, conducted two fly tying classes at the shop on Saturday. While the other events were taking place around town, 15 attendees met at the shop and sharpened their fly tying skills. The ladies were provided the vices and materials to each tie a woolly bugger, a Sunday Special and a Y2K. Ron’s at the shop at least once or twice a week, either working or bringing those customers in who take his Fly Fishing 101 classes. For more information on taking any of Ron’s classes, please visit Ron’s website at www.ronsflyfishing101.com.

The event kicked off with a Meet and Greet at the shop Friday night, allowing beginner, novice and professional time to get to know one another and share their perspectives on the art, and fashion, of fly fishing. As part of the Orvis 50/50 On the Water initiative, Dally’s provided the attendees the availably to try on the Women’s Orvis Ultralight waders and boots in every size available, allowing some the chance to try on waders and boots for the very first time. Those who participated in the wader/boot try on program, filled out comment cards to be submitted to Orvis and were entered into a drawing for a chance to win an Orvis Fishewear Safe Passage Sling Pack. Susan Dollar, from Missouri was the lucky winner!

As a bonus during the designated ladies weekend, internet celebrity, Kristen “Tuff” Scott stopped by the shop and I outfitted her in a pair of the Orvis Ultralight waders and Ultralight boots. We then hooked her up with some flies and supplies to help get her started into the wonderful world of fly fishing, and hopefully into the hopper action we’ve been having here on the White and Norfork Rivers.

On Monday, Phil and I, along with our good friend and guide, Kim Rowland-Dollins, of Ryder’s Run Guide Services, took Tuff out on the river for a day of fly fishing. Kim spent some time with Tuff beforehand, instructing her on proper casting techniques and rod control in landing the catch. And did she get the practice! What started out to be just a few hours of fly fishing, ended up being a full day of hauling in an assortment of rainbows and three healthy browns, the largest of those browns measuring over 17 inches. What a joy it was to witness the look on Tuff’s face when she landed her very first brown trout.

What a perfect way to end a weekend filled with lady angler’s pursuing their passion of fly fishing and fly tying. Thanks to everyone involved in this weekend’s events, and for providing us the resources to grow and improve, for making some of our dreams come true and for encouraging us all to FISH ON!”
