Take a kid fishing: Gabe Levin and Gracie on Dry Run Creek earlier this year

Some great things in life indeed are free, and one is the annual Free Fishing Weekend sponsored by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Anglers of any age can fish without a license from noon Friday until midnight Sunday anywhere in the state. For a near sure-thing and a great experience for kids, the AGFC recommends visiting one of the AGFC’s five fish hatcheries Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Each hatchery puts on a fishing derby for children 12 and under; each child must be supervised by an adults.

The kids can catch and keep up to three catfish (or three trout at the Jim Hinkle Spring River State Fish Hatchery). Plus, there are contests for prizes. Click on the link or call (501) 676-9506 for information on the fishing derbies and other places to fish around the state.
