Cheri McDonald enjoying the fruits of a day at Rim

Sister on The Fly Cheri McDonald enjoying the fruits of a day at Rim

Low flows, lots of fish means big smiles. All our guides have been spending plenty of time on the water last week and having a hoot. The water is still a touch cloudy at Rim but that’s not stopping the fish hammering midges. Looks like being a great weekend with Conclave, and some fine fishing

WHITE RIVER: Smallmouth guru-in-training Ben Levin and the Journal had a hoot Saturday at Rim Shoal with 4 Sisters On The Fly.  SOTF is a group of women bound by their shared passion for fly fishing, vintage camping trailers and challenging themselves in the outdoors. They are a fun group and my old friend Cheri McDonald has now made the White River outing a regular part of the schedule. Last year of course they were here during the flood. This year made it all the more worthwhile

Even Ben and I were giggling along with our four Sisters for some vintage White River entertainment. Lots of rainbows with a small but pretty brown and a a similarly sized cutt for fun. Cheri and Lucy with me also hooked 3 very nice fish but missed out on the slice of luck you sometimes need on the really good fish.

Midges have been doing very well, even in the tinted water at Rim Shoals where the Davy Wotton Hot Head Super Midges excelled. Davy Wotton White Tails, regular Zebra midges in black and copper were also killer.

Kevin Brandtonies dropped in this morning and he was having similar success with worms, midges and eggs up stream, particularly when the water was a little higher.

Woolly Buggers, particularly Krystal Body bead head have been doing very well, as have tan and white woollies.

NORFORK:  The Norfork has offered reliable morning wading with Zebra Midges, WD40s and Black/Olive Poison Tungs all performing well. Soft Hackles are another very good bet for the midge hatches, try a Hares Ear or Partridge and Green.
