SOMETIMES it pays off to get out of the water and just lay in the grass. In ’02, I spent several days out on the back end of Kodiak Island chasing King Salmon for an article for Flylife magazine. The water was low and the fishing relatively slow, but with a limited time schedule and the long Alaskan summer days we were spending 15 or 16 hours a day fishing hard. The saltwater 10wt I had borrowed for the trip would have been fine for shots at cruising tarpon at 60′+, but the endless, repetitive 40′ cast and mend on the Ayakulik with this stick had me unable to lift my arm above shoulder height by the end of the second day. So I laid on the bank, and watched my companion Jeff fish, when this fox came into view, closer and closer.

The pic below came from earlier in the same 17-day trip. Gray Alaskan skies, gothic mountain tops and a fishing boat wreck just seemed right for some touch-up in Photobucket.
